Two Views of Southend – Photographs by Josef Koudelka and Ron McCormick

Beecroft Art Gallery
11.00 am to 5.00 pm

In 1972, as part of a major project involving eight towns, The Arts Council commissioned two photographers, Josef Koudelka and Ron McCormick, to work in Southend with the aim of revealing to the people of the town how they and their environment are seen by two outside observers.

The photographers took inspiration from the influence daytrippers had (and continue to have) on the street and beach life in Southend. The resulting images were later displayed in the Beecroft Art Gallery, Station Road, Westcliff between 24 March – 22 April 1973 and would later tour local schools and community centres.

Showing in their entirety for the first time since, these images continue to offer a fascinating insight into life in the town at that time and are as relevant now as they were when they were first displayed some 50 years ago.

Please note the gallery is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
