STW Creative Collective: Steel Here Workshop

The Haven Community Hub
1.00 pm to 3.00 pm
The Other MA (TOMA)

Join us for a session learning to play the steel pan drums at Havens Community Centre on Saturday the 27th of August! Prior to being taught how to play the steel pan, Josephine Melville will give a brief discussion on the history of the instrument and what the Steel Here Band do. There will be a break in between playing the pans to socialise, have some food and learn from one another.

As part of Southend’s Twilight Worlds, there is a Creative Club for 16- to 25-year-olds consisting of five free public events. Each workshop is designed to encourage you to creatively expand your knowledge on local queer histories, encourage self-expression and show the kinds of careers you may want to explore within the arts. To ensure these series of events are accessible to all, we have a budget to pay for travel expenses per person for each event.

ABOUT THE STEEL HERE PAN BAND
Steel Here are Southend City’s first Community Steel Pan Band. The formation of the Steel Here Pan Band came out of workshops that were created by The South Essex African Caribbean Association (SEACA) and initially funded by Essex Community Foundation (ECF) to encourage young people to come out and socialise, make new friends to improve their wellbeing. The workshops now continue every Saturday, currently with members ranging from ages 7 all the way to 78, and continue to welcome new members.
