A screening of classic camp comedy ‘The Birdcage’ (1996), part of our ‘Cult Classics’ series at the Beecroft Cinema Club.
Beecroft Cinema Club presents ‘Cult Classics’ series, screening the iconic films that fans are frenzied for on the last Thursday of each month on the big screen at the Beecroft Art Gallery.
In June, we’re going to Miami for Oscar nominated comedy ‘The Birdcage’ (1996), directed by Mike Nichols and starring comedy legends Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. A 90’s cult classic, the screenplay adapted a1978 French-Italian film La Cage aux Folles, which was itself an adaptation of a 1973 play of the same name.
Robin Williams plays Armand Goldman, owner of a drag club called The Birdcage; his flamboyant partner Albert (Nathan Lane) is the club’s aging star attraction, ‘Starina’. Together, they live in an apartment above The Birdcage with their Guatemalan housekeeper, agony aunt and aspiring drag artist Agador (Hank Azaria). Armand’s son Val comes home to announce his engagement to Barbara Keeley, daughter of an ultra conservative U.S. Senator. The senator and family descend upon South Beach to meet Val, his father and “mother”, and comedic chaos ensues. This film has been chosen for our June screening to coincide with pride month, and Southend Pride.
Doors open and refreshments will be available from 6pm and the film will start promptly at 6:30pm (there are no adverts). There is no allocated seating.
The film’s run time is 1hr 57 minutes.
The film is rated ’15’ and this event is 15+ only.
