Archaeology Tour – Southend Museums Collections Centre
Join Southend Museums for a special, curator led behind the scenes tour of our archaeology collection at ‘Southend Museums Collections Centre’.
Join the archaeology curator in June for a specialist guided stores tour of our extensive archaeology collections, spanning two million years of local history. The tour will cover objects from the prehistoric ages, the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons through to the medieval and early modern periods, up to and including the London shipwreck. There will then be a chance for an even closer look in an interactive handling session with a selection of objects in the research room.
The tour will last for approximately 1 hour total, and will commence from the new SMCC reception area on the 2nd floor of the Beecroft Art Gallery.
Southend Museums Collections Centre (SMCC) officially opened on March 7th 2026. Located on the 2nd floor of the Beecroft Art Gallery building, SMCC offers the community special, previously impossible access to the entire archaeology and social history collections, and a behind-the-scenes look into museum curation, conservation and research work.
