Join author Andrew Summers as he tells the remarkable story of the first 40 years of Southend Pier.
Based on the book ‘The Struggle to Build Southend’s First Pier’ by Marion Pearce, we’ll hear of the powerful businessmen and landowners who repeatedly clash over the location of the pier and argue over the imposition of tolls, plus the incidents of vandalism and violence.
In its almost 200 year life, our pier has seen damage by fire and ship and has survived plans for demolition – come along to discover the story.
