Holocaust Memorial Day Service

This annual event is a time for reflection on the genocides that have occurred over the last century and what we can do to build a safer and more inclusive society.

The commemoration includes music, reflections, presentation by students, poetry and an address by Holocaust Survivor Ivan Shaw BEM, supported by his son Philip Shaw. Ivan Shaw was born in 1939 in the former Yugoslavia, now Serbia. His parents were deported to Auschwitz when he was 5 years old and did not return. He was hidden for about 9 months and came to England in 1947 at the age of 9. Now a grandfather-of-six he only began speaking of his experiences a few years ago as the memories were “too painful” but was persuaded to tell his story. We welcome Mr Shaw, and his son Philip Shaw, to talk about these experiences.

The service of commemoration is open to all and guests are invited to arrive early in order to view the exhibitions. Parking is available in the Civic Centre car park, off Carnarvon Road, and will be free for this event.

2 exhibitions will be on display, The Righteous Among The Nations and The Search For The Missing After The Holocaust. They are also available to view at The Forum from 16th – 25th January.
