In this hugely entertaining comedy thriller, Government bureaucrats arrive in Kent to enquire why a fertile area of marshland is not being cultivated. The reason is a liquor smuggling operation which, although apparently organised under an ancient charter, the locals are keen to keep from the bureaucrats’ prying eyes.
Based on the 1949 novel by Howard Clewes, and primarily filmed in the Romney Marsh area (though some scenes were filmed on and around Hickling Broad, in Norfolk) the wonderfully eclectic cast is led by the likes of Roger Livesey, Honor Blackman and Richard Burton.
