Brothers in Art: Walter & Harold Steggles and the East London GroupBeecroft Art Gallery
Beecroft Art Gallery is very excited to welcome Brothers in Art: Walter and Harold Steggles & the East London Group this September.
Following on from the popular 2016 exhibition “Out of the City” by members of the East London Group, the Beecroft Art Gallery is proud to present a new exhibition featuring works by two leading members of the group, Walter, and Harold Steggles, along with a representative selection of work by fourteen of their contemporaries. The group was comprised of mainly working men and women from the East End augmented by a few trained artists from the Slade School of Fine Art, tutored by John Cooper and mentored by Walter Sickert at their art classes in Bow.
Brought together from nearly 40 family holdings and private collections around the country and from the Shell Heritage Art Collection, this is a rare and exciting opportunity to see original works, exhibition catalogues and sketchbooks. Around 50 works from the 150 on display, have not been seen in public for in excess of 80 years.
Alongside the Steggles brothers, the exhibition includes work from a selection of the East London Group artists including Albert Turpin, Archibald Hattemore, Brynhild Parker, Cecil Osborne, C G Hamilton Dicker, Elwin Hawthorne, George Board, Hannah Cohen, Henry Silk, John Cooper, Lilian Leahy, Phyllis Bray and W S Mummery as well as three paintings by Annie Elizabeth Steggles, Walter and Harold’s mother, who took up painting aged 73.
