The Mysterious Maria Scratton
Prittlewell Priory
1st June- 1st September

Local illustrator, printmaker and artist Kitty Oakley is staging an exhibition of her work within Prittlewell Priory.

Inspired by a Victorian portrait of Maria Scratton hanging in the Priory, the exhibition explores the scandalous romance between an unknown, working class woman from Foulness Island, Maria Scratton to the Lord of the Manor of Prittlewell.
Marrying in 1844, the couple lived at Prittlewell Priory until 1868, and having had no children, their story has remained untold.

Kitty was inspired to discover more about Maria and has visited Foulness Island to research her family history, and the Essex Records Office to scour the archives. Information about the lives of Victorian working class women is scant, but the fragments she found inspired her to create a new body of work about this remarkable woman.
