Talking Drums, storytelling and poetry; Communication culture and tradition of the Yoruba people, Nigeria
Pre-booking required. Taking place as part of the A Better Start Southend Festival of Conversations taking place across Southend from 12-26 October for families with children up to 4-years-old, and early years’ professionals.
We’re excited to partner with Klimax, a community organisation servicing the African community in South East England. Taking place during Black History Month, this diverse and inclusive session will showcase the importance of Talking Drums, Storytelling and Poetry within the Yoruba cultural context.
This event will encourage conversations, socialisation and shared thoughts, within our community. Nigerians in West Africa used Talking Drums and poetry as important means of communication. Drums were used to send detailed messages from village to village much faster than a person could walk or ride a horse!! The sound of talking drums could reach up to 4 to 5 miles!
Exposure to rhythm through poetry and music helps little brains develop and grow. So help us reach young people and families from West African backgrounds while sharing with the wider, culturally rich, Southend community.
Accessible parking nearby, accessible toilet and baby changing facilities are available. This session is open to all Southend families with children under 4 years old.
Please note all Festival of Conversations may have a photographer and videographer present to capture the session. There will be an option to opt out of any media consent upon arrival at the session.
