Why is Southend bidding for the title?
Liverpool's tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2008, provided a programme of some wonderful events and activities which took place during the year. This attracted both national and international coverage and a significant social and economic benefit which the city will enjoy for decades.
By putting Southend's ‘culture' centre-stage and bidding for this title, we also have the chance to put Southend on the map, attract more visitors, create new jobs, and generate investment. Southend's bid is centred around "accessible culture" - the town has a wealth of venues and opportunities for cultural activity, from its iconic Pier to its 2 theatres, its beaches and foreshore, its clubs, museums, galleries, libraries and more. "The Town the Shore and so much More".
It's not just about the competition though. The bid to be the UK's first City of Culture in 2013 spearheads an ambitious programme of cultural activity which will boost the town's confidence and give our residents better prospects for the future.
